Suzanne Ferguson - a new approach in mathematical tutoring and mentoring.

Suzanne Ferguson has been tutoring, teaching and mentoring in mathematics since 1997. Her background is as strong in theoretical mathematics (see Research) as it is in teaching and educational resources (see About Suzanne and Resume). Her experiences as a student in the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) and later at the Univeristy of Wisconsin - Madison prepared her for the rigor and deep understanding of higher mathematics necessary to tailor her teaching techniques for each student--carefully explaining the problems and concepts in exactly the way each student needs. Suzanne's extensive teaching background--10 years tutoring secondary and post-secondary courses including all levels of Calculus--has given her the patience, insight and experience necessary to help create a individualized and unique teaching method for each and every student.

The College Board's AP Vertical Challenge - A Summer Prep courses for AP Teachers

In the summer of 2001 Suzanne attended and completed the College Board's AP Vertical Challenge - Calculus AB, a two week intensive summer course designed for AP Teachers. The following school year she taught Calculus AB and BC at Wayland Academy.
Student Works From an "F" to an "A"  By End of Semester!

Tutoring for Anna began in October when she realized this year of math was different from the other years she had studied mathematics.  She found AP Calculus challenging, in fact, so much so that she found herself with an "F."  She began tutoring, 1-hour sessions, twice per week.  Here's her story:

“Math has always been easy for me, until this year. AP Calculus was a struggle from the start, and once my first grade came in as an “F” I knew that I needed help. This is when Suzanne came to my rescue! She took me step by step through everything we had covered during the first few months of school, and I was caught up in no time! Suzanne knows tricks and short cuts for everything and she is really good at explaining concepts. She taught me how to make study notes for each test, which I will keep to study for the AP test; she is helping me get prepared! I look forward to our tutoring sessions because she is so patient and kind and she never makes me feel stupid. At the end of this semester my grade was an “A”. Suzanne taught me the concepts in a way that I will remember them for the AP test in the spring; she has been such a help and encouragement!”

Student Aims for "A" and Earns It --

Katie began tutoring with Suzanne at the beginning of her Single Variable Calculus summer class right off the bat. She knew the University of Minnesota's 8-week, 5-day-a-week intensive course, which met for 2 hours per class period would be tough. She wanted to aim for an "A," but was concerned she wouldn't be able to make the grade. She and Suzanne met for 2 one-hour sessions per week through the 8-weeks. They would work on discussing material Katie didn't understand from lecture, questions from her homework, and working ahead. In the end, Katie's email says it all:

Hi Suzy!

I got an A- on the final and an A in the class!!!

Thanks so much for all of your help this summer! It made a world of difference!

Katie
