FERGUSON TUTORING’S CAMPAIGN FOR CONFIDENCE
UNDERWAY IN TWIN CITIES
Free essay contest and parent-teacher events are among the highlights.
Minnetonka, MN: This fall, Ferguson Tutoring is sponsoring a free essay contest, parent-teacher events and an instructional content series, all to boost the confidence of Twin Cities students. This “Campaign for Confidence” takes on the head game of academic anxiety that makes high school stressful for students and parents alike.
Ferguson Tutoring’s founder, Suzanne Ferguson, understands why confidence works. “I rarely encounter a student who can’t handle the work,” she says. “The problem is that they’re plagued with stress, anxiety, and doubt. They’re missing the mental piece. That’s where confidence comes in.”
By teaching confidence, Ferguson Tutoring hopes to accomplish three goals:
Improve student performance in the classroom and on tests like the ACT
Advise parents/teachers how to nurture academic confidence
Introduce students to confidence-building techniques that last a lifetime
The secret to building confidence lies in “small step” instruction and low-stakes practice. Suzanne compares it to athletics.
“Do you think the captain of the football team makes his first tackle under bright lights? No way! He practices every single movement in low-stakes situations until he can’t miss. Then he heads out there for the real thing. That’s how learning and testing should be.”
The essay contest is low-stakes practice in action. “The college application essay makes kids tremble,” Suzanne explains. “We want them to feel good about their applications, so we’re giving every high school student in the Twin Cities a chance to practice and get some personalized feedback first.” Plus, there are over $3,000 worth of free tutoring prizes in all.
The schedule for parent-teacher events has not yet been finalized.
Online, the campaign will highlight student stories, like that of Eden Prairie senior Isaac Martin, who received a 9-point gain on his ACT score after receiving a confidence boost from strengths-based tutoring. Also, look for free, confidence-building instructional posts.
